Introducing the Fujinon PL 85-300 Cabrio PL Mount Zoom. While the PL 85-300 is similar in size and weight as the PL 19-90, its longer lens makes it ideal for shooting documentaries, nature and wildlife, and car commercials, among other demanding production scenarios. The PL 85-300 offers a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, with 200-degree focus rotation.
Designed using the latest optical simulation technology, the PL 85-300 Cabrio not only offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image but in the corners of the frame as well. Like the highly acclaimed PL 19-90 Cabrio, the PL 85-300 is equipped with the same indispensable features including flange focal distance adjustment, a MOD of 1.2m, a macro function for objects as close as 97mm (3.8-inches), and covers a 31.5mm sensor size.
The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—such as the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate and the lens supports Lens Data System (LDS) and /i metadata formats. Like the PL 19-90 Cabrio, the new PL 85-300 features an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making it suitable for use as a standard PL lens or as an ENG-style lens. And the PL 85-300 can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units. The other Premier PL Mount Series lenses are available in 14.5-45mm T2.0, 18-85mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400 mm T2.8-T3.8 ranges.
“We designed the new PL 85-300, and the entire Premier PL zoom lens family, to give professional cinematographers and videographers the utmost in features and versatility. We believe that a wide array of choices help them match the right lens with the unique demands of their high-end productions,” said Thom Calabro, director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division.
“Versatility means that videographers accustomed to shooting ENG-style will be right at home with a servo attached to the lens, while cinematographers who shoot projects like feature films and commercials can opt to shoot without it,” Calabro explained. “Cinematographers will also like that this lens accepts industry standard cine motors and matte boxes.”
The Matthews HD DC Slider, Sony F3 and Fujinon Cabrio PL Mount Zoom 85-300 are all available from Camera Department.

Convergent Design Gemini 4:4:4 Firmware 1.5.146
Submitted by cameradepartment on Mon, 2013-02-25 13:29
Convergent Design has released it's latest firmware for Gemini 4:4:4, version 1.5.146. This is production-level firmware that improves the overall speed and reliability of the unit. It is recommended for ALL users.
Elimination of file closing time with SSD Safe Eject. Currently, Gemini firmware requires 5-20 seconds to close files after each record session ("take"). This new firmware completely eliminates this delay by adding an SSD Safe Eject feature which closes files just prior to removing the SSD from the Gemini (SSD Safe Eject only requires 2 seconds to complete the file closing generation). Don't worry if you forget to perform SSD Safe Eject; nothing is lost! You can just put the SSD back into the Gemini and perform the SSD Safe Eject as normal!
File Recovery within the Gemini 4:4:4. Loss of power during recording or the accidental removal of an SSD during record can spell major problems with data integrity (often requiring software recovery tools on the PC/Mac). This new firmware adds file recovery within the Gemini 444. Simply select this feature from the Gemini menu and wait 1 to 60 seconds (rate depends on number of clips) for the Gemini to rebuild the files. Normally, you will only lose less than 10 frames of video.
Improved reliability of Convergent Design SSD's. Embedded within this new Gemini firmware is an SSD firmware update (yes, that is a bit confusing). This new SSD firmware greatly improves reliability, especially when power is lost while recording. The Gemini firmware will automatically detect the need to update your SSD firmware and prompt you accordingly (takes about one minute).
Additional C500 modes. In addition to modes currently supported, we this release we have included support for: HD 12-Bit 1080p50, and 4K Half Raw at 100/119.98/120fps. See the C500 Support document below for full details.

The Matthew's FloatCam HD DC Slider is Now Available from Camera Department Toronto!
Submitted by cameradepartment on Thu, 2012-11-01 17:48The FloatCam HD DC Slider features all of the operating characteristics of the original DC Slider but this “Big Brother” will accommodate camera packages up to 70 pounds (30Kg.) which includes all of the new, state of the art, digital cameras and accessories.
The FloatCam HD DC Slider operates through a wide range of variable angles as well as horizontally and the precision counter balance assures smooth operation from start to stop of the camera moves. The HD DC Slider also operates as a mini jib and vertical tower as well as ground level or table top camera support.
The HD DC Slider will perform all the same moves as the Floatcam DC Slider, only with a heavier camera package.

ANGLES: The HD DC-Slider allows a wide rance of variable angle operations. No matter how acute the angle, the counterbalance system will assure steady and stable camera movements. A simple, positive-locking adjustment feature allows for camera placement at the exact vertical or off-axis position for creative imaging. Minimum and maximum heights of the HD DC-Slider in the multi-angled positions are dependent on the height of the tripod.
MINI-JIB: In the Mini-Jib mode, the HD DC-Slider operates a working diameter of 63" (160cm) on the horizontal. The counterbalance system is locked to ensure unvarying movements through the full-range of the hib arm's capabilities. An easy adjustment of the parallelogram bar will allow the camera to stay locked on to a subject through the rance of the jib arm's vertical travel rather than staying in a fixed attitude. The maximum and minimum operating heights of the Mini-jib function are dependent on the height of the tripod.
TOWER: With the simple removal and repositioning of two handles, the HD DC-Slider becomes a tower allowing for an exact vertical camera move through the full rance of the 63" (160cm) track. Minimum and maximum heights of the camera moves, when mounted on the tower, are dependent on tripod configuration. The counterbalance system maintains a steady resistance to camera moves reducing the possibilities of irregular movements during the start or finish of a camera move.
SLIDER: The HD DC-Slider can be mounted on a single tripod or placed on level or uneven surfaces and the constant counterbalance feature will always maintain a uniform pressure that ensures uniform camera movements throughout the full tracking length of 63" (160cm)
Specifications:
- Rail length: 73” (185cm)
- Tracking length: 63” (160cm)
- Maximum Load: 70 Lbs. (30Kg)
- System Weight: 90 Lbs. (41Kg)
- Mini Jib working diameter: 63” (160cm)
- Flight cases included.
- Motion Control System available.
ARRIRAW 4:3 Support Slated for July Release
Submitted by cameradepartment on Thu, 2012-06-14 16:12
Convergent Design has received a great reception from Alexa users and rental houses, but one question loomed: "Will Gemini 4:4:4 be able to support ARRIRAW 4:3 in addition to 16:9?" Convergent Design is excited to announce that we will be supporting 4:3 (2880 x 2160). This support will be included in the ARRIRAW Option and will be a free firmware to users with the option already installed. Planned availability has been pushed up to a July release date.
The upcoming firmware will include an Auto SSD Backup function that allows two identical masters to be created simultaneously. This feature provides extra security on set. The Gemini will automatically cross verify the video and audio data as well as the directory and FAT tables. Additionally, Convergent will be providing a SSD Transfer Program to support the offload of data, especially from raided drives (shooting 1080p50/60). Also in the works is Stereo 3D (paid upgrade), Avid DNxHD, Camera Selection List, Programmable LUTs, and many more!
